My Nintendo Gold Point System is Coming to an End

Nintendo has announced that players will no longer receive Gold Points for purchasing Nintendo Switch games, and current points will be removed 12 months after they were issued.

The Gold Point system rewarded players for purchasing physical and digital games, and could be exchanged as currency to redeem free games or get discounts. This has been a part of the Nintendo Switch since the beginning; however, it was also easy to overlook as it required players to open a menu and redeem the points themselves when purchasing physically.

Currently Gold Points can still be redeemed, however the ability to do so will be removed on 3/24/2025.

To learn more, Nintendo has provided a complete break down of what changed, and when it will go into effect.

Gold Points are currently worth $0.01 per point, which means 500 points would equal roughly $5.00 in credit. (This is the same pricing as Nintendo's original credit system used on the Wii.)

Points are obtained at a 5% rate when purchasing digital games, with a reduced rate for physical. A game of $59.99 would amount to 300 points when purchased digitally, but only 60 for a physical copy. This encouraged users to purchase games digitally over physical copies by offering more rewards, with roughly twenty full price purchases resulting in one free game.

For anyone who has physical Switch games they haven't redeemed points on, now is your chance to do so before the service comes to an end. Just keep in mind that points can only be redeemed for once user, so Switch consoles with multiple logins should be aware of this fact before claiming them.

Additionally, Nintendo has also confirmed Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers will not be compatible with Switch 2 games. Vouchers are sold in a bundle of two for $99.98, and allow Switch Online users to redeem full priced Switch games.
