Harbour Masters, the group that previously ported The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask to PC, have brought the classic Star Fox 64 to PC as well!
This PC port of the game allows for wide screen support, uncapped framerate, and other modern PC enhancements. The catch is however, despite being unofficial, you need to own an actual copy of Star Fox 64 to play it. And that is not all.
As this is a PC game, users need to dump the ROM of their legally obtained copy of Star Fox 64, and then use a converter to put it into .z64 format. From here the ROM can be loaded into the new fan mod, and then be played on nearly any PC.
While we here at Netto's Game Room cannot provide you with the instructions to do so, more information can be found over at the project's GitHub page.
Typically fan games and fan projects like this get shut down by Nintendo, but as the game contains no copyrighted assets, it is technically no different from putting a CD into a CD player. The CD itself, or in this case the legally obtained Star Fox 64 ROM, contains everything, while the CD player simply plays it. Here Starship is the player, while the game itself is still the original Star Fox 64.
This same process was used to bring both Nintendo 64 Zelda games to the PC, and can still be downloaded and played today. Assuming you have legal copies of the Zelda games that is.
