Netto's Game Room's Indie Games of the Year 2024

Victory Heat Rally World Map

2024 has finally came to an end, and this year there were a lot of amazing Indie Games released! So instead of simply talking about our Game of the Year and calling it quits, we here at Netto's Game Room decided to take a look back at just the indies!

So here you go! Here is Netto's Game Room's Indie Games of the Year 2024!

Ben's Indie Game of the Year: Victory Heat Rally

I’ve played some pretty great indie titles this year, but there is one that clearly stands out among the rest for me… And that is Victory Heat Rally!

When Jeremy first interviewed the developers of the game earlier this year, I was pretty impressed by what I was reading. It was a classic styled over-the-top racing game, and seeing it instantly brought me back to my childhood with games like Super Mario Kart. As a huge racing fan I couldn’t wait to play it, and I was planning on purchasing it day one. Well those plans changed when Playtonic was kind enough to pass us along an early review copy (which I am so very grateful for), and I became one of the handful of people lucky enough to be among the firsts to experience it! And let me tell you, it surpassed my expectations.

Now I do want to make this clear, I am not saying any of this because I was given a free copy. I never let free stuff influence my opinion of games, and I have always been honest when publishing such reviews. In cases where a game is way too early in development to share a review on I’ll simply let the developer know my thoughts, and then move on with my life. I feel there is no reason to drag a game through the mud simply because it is in an alpha state. For games that have actually been released though? That’s a different story! Everything is fair game. That being said, everything I wrote about Victory Heat Rally in my review is exactly how I felt about the game.

I simply love it.

The retro art style, the fast races, the unique tracks, the drift based gameplay (I loved snaking in Mario Kart DS and F-Zero), and I really enjoyed the way the campaign was setup. I thought the world map was a really cool idea, and earning stars is pretty addicting to me. Did I 100% the game? No, but I did get lost in time trials longer than I originally planned to, and spent countless hours just testing out the different vehicle builds! I’ll admit that life hasn’t allowed me a lot of time to go back to the game since the review, but it is for sure one of the funnest experiences I had this year, and it will forever be a game I keep downloaded at all times.

And again, I’m not just saying this; I truly mean it. Skydevilpalm has made something special, and I can’t thank them enough.

Jonsku's Indie Game of the Year: Decline's Drops

For me this year it had to be Decline’s Drops, it just has a certain charm to it with its traditional hand drawn art style and very fun platforming action + great soundtrack. Even after the review I went out of the way to buy the official soundtrack in bandcamp so I can keep on listening to that final boss song.

But really it is a game that will be stuck in my mind for a good while now.

GlacialLeaf's Indie Game of the Year: ATLYSS

Sonic X Shadow Generations! I mean, Sonic Team is a small indie team. That’s why half their games barely even work.

For indie game of the year for me, I’ll honestly have to go with ATLYSS. Yes, that one. No, I’m not a pervert. No, it’s not an MMO, like some YouTubers like to claim.

ATLYSS is an action RPG with some really great character customization, incredible controls, really fun dungeons, challenging platforming… challenges, and just flat out fun gameplay that you can even play with friends. It might not be an MMO, but you can make your own server and invite friends to play with you.

Honestly, I don’t really have much to say about this game without doing a full-on deep dive into it, other than ‘it’s just plain fun.’ Would recommend it to anyone who likes old school action RPG games.
