Next up on our Countdown to Christmas we take a look back at games that either remind us of, or give us that "Christmas feeling!"
This was an interesting question to ask, as one of our writers here at Netto's Game Room actually celebrates Hanukkah instead
Anyway, here is what everyone had to say.
Jeremy: Jak and Daxter
Jak and Daxter. I got it for Christmas the year that it came out, along with our PlayStation 2. I had not heard of the game before then, and I had actually asked for Tomba 2 for Christmas, but my sister was recommended Jak and Daxter by the Babbage’s staff, as it was the big Christmas hit that year, and she took a gamble on it to get me, as she couldn’t find Tomba 2 anywhere. I instantly fell in love with the game. I remember sitting around the TV with my family, marveling over the graphics and how lifelike we thought it looked in 2001. It was honestly probably the game that made me a life-long PlayStation fan.
Jonsku: Super Smash Bros Melee
That would have to be Super Smash Bros. Melee, I had been desperately wishing for a gamecube throughout the entire year and was unsure if my parents would actually get it for me. Earlier that year I even entered a ferry lottery to try to win a GameCube but ended up winning a pogo stick (which was still big to win anything at all but the child me was only sad to lose out on the chance for a GameCube lol). Low and behold that very same year Christmas I was given a game cube, two controllers and ofc Super Smash Bros. Melee. It was thanks to my big brother being the “consultant” for my parents that they chose something I really wanted.
GlacialLeaf: Pokemon Silver
Uh… I’m Jewish? Nor am I American? No game reminds me of Christmas because I just flat out don’t celebrate Christmas.
Honestly, the closest thing I have to that is Pokemon Silver, along with my first Game Boy Color.
When I was in first grade, my mom went on a trip to the US for like a month, and my brother and I stayed with our dad for the duration. When she finally returned, I remember it was during school day, so my dad took us to go see her. My brother was in kindergarten, and we got to leave really early to go greet her. I still remember seeing rainbows in the sky on the way to the airport.
And when she arrived, she gave my brother and I a Game Boy Color each, along with a pack of about thirty games. I got a turquoise one, while my brother got a clear purple one.
I don’t remember too many of those games. I know Battle Arena Toshinden was there. Power Rangers: Time Force. A TMNT game. DuckTales, PaperBoy, and Bionic Commando, too. But I was a big Pokemon fan at the time, as the anime had just started airing two years prior to that, and one of the games she gave us was Pokemon Silver.
I instantly fell in love with the game. Not knowing English, or what was going on in general, didn’t deter me. I just couldn’t stop playing and killing batteries. I played it tons with my cousin, as well.
Eventually, my Game Boy Color’s START button died, and instead of repairing it, my mom decided to throw it out. But fun fact, years later, I went to a convention with plans of buying a PlayStation 1, as I had 2-4 and both Portable and Vita, and wanted to complete my collection.
But then I saw it. A turquoise Game Boy Color. I couldn’t help it. I bought it right there and then, along with five Pokemon games. And those I still have to this day.
It might not be a Christmas story, but Pokemon Silver and the Game Boy Color are still near and dear to my heart to this day.
Ben: Rock Band
I could go on and on and on about how much Sonic Adventure reminds me of Christmas, or I could retell the tale of me getting the DreamCast for Christmas; however, today I wanted to talk about something different. And that “something” is none other than Rock Band.
When Rock Band ended service and moved to Fortnite, that was a huge blow to me. I’ll be blunt; I do not like Fortnite whatsoever, and a lot of it does get on my nerves. That being said, to continue playing a “game that I love,” I had no choice but to jump back into a game I never wanted to return to. That being said, Rock Band is something that will always remind me of Christmas, and unfortunately for me… That does extend to Fortnite Festival.
I’ve told the story of how I got Beatles Rock Band for Christmas back in college, but since that day Rock Band has kinda become a Christmas tradition for me. It is around this time every year I get in the mood to jump back into some of my long time favorite songs, and shoot for new high scores! I guess it doesn’t help that not only did I obtain Beatles Rock Band, LEGO Rock Band, Rock Band 3, and Rock Band 4 on Christmas, but it is when I jumped into Fortnite Festival as well. It is a game I would play with my family, and continue to do so, and jumping back into it reminds me of all the good times we had with it. It is crazy to see how many years have gone by since the first time I booted up the game, but each time I pick up that guitar it feels like it was just yesterday.
Sure, it isn’t a “Christmas game” by any means, but it is special, and I will continue returning to it for years to come. No matter what form it might take on going forward.
