Countdown to Christmas: Favorite Snow Music

The second part of our Countdown to Christmas here at Netto's Game Room is a follow up to our first article! While last time we asked our writers what their favorite snow stage was, this time we are looking at our favorite snow musical scores!

Here is what everyone had to say, as well as the songs themselves for easy listening!

Jeremy

My favorite video game track from a snow level is “In a Snow-Bound Land” from Donkey Kong Country 2. I could talk for hours about how much I love David Wise’s music; especially his Donkey Kong Country tracks. He’s known for his naturalistic, ambient approach to soundtrack design. You’ve no doubt heard some of his tracks, most likely Aquatic Ambience or Stickerbush Symphony. In A Snow-Bound Land is a deliciously synth-heavy track, and pays homage to the title song from the 1983 Japanese film Antarctica, whose soundtrack was composed by acclaimed musician Vangelis. In A Snow-Bound Land is one of those songs that I can put on at any time that I’m feeling stressed and within seconds, my mind is elsewhere and I can unwind a little bit. It’s a beautiful song, and I highly recommend listening to it if you never have.

GlacialLeaf

I’m honestly split on this one. On the one hand - ICE CAP ZONE THEME FROM THE GENESIS ORIGINAL SONIC 3. Honestly, I listened to that song constantly - both the Genesis version, and The Jetzons’ ‘Hard Times.’ I’m not going to go full Jeremy on it and talk about how much I love the composer, because I honestly haven’t listened to other songs by the Jetzons, and it clearly wasn’t written by the incredible late Michael Jackson, but there’s something about it that just… clearly fits the level. I think Ice Cap Theme, I think snow level.

But on the other hand, if I actually do try thinking of it, I cannot help but think of Snowflakes from Persona 4. That song is incredibly melancholy, practically nostalgic in its feelings, and quite painful for me to listen to. When I listen to that song, I cannot help but feel the coldness of winters past, and the feeling of the coldness of melancholy washing over me. It’s incredibly hard for me to listen to, but it’s practically my favorite song from the game. A true winter song.

Ben

To go along with what GlacialLeaf said... My favorite snow themed song from a video game is for sure none other than SNOWFLAKES. This song was introduced in the winter arc added to Persona 4 Golden, and sets the mood for the rest of the game. As our main character Yu Narukami walks through the snowy streets of Inaba for the last time, this song plays as a reminder of everything that happened over the last year, and serves as a goodbye song as well. It is a sad song, but also extremely catchy, and easily one of the best songs in an already amazing soundtrack. As an added bonus, the song was remixed and included in Persona 4 Dancing All Night as well. Needless to say, it is one of my favorite songs in that game also!

Jonsku

It has to be Croc the Legends of Gobbos, in general that soundtrack was a killer (in a good way) but the snow levels used the soundtracks theme so nicely to give a christmassy vibe. It even managed to give a previous spooky theme a “christmasy” feel!
