Warcraft II: Remastered Seems To Be On The Horizon

It appears that the beloved, classic, real-time strategy title Warcraft II is set to receive a remaster. Per a post from the famed Blizzard-centric news site, Wowhead, files have appeared on Blizzard's servers named "Warcraft II: Remastered Internal Alpha," as well as a couple of images with the game's branding. We don't know anything else yet, but I would assume an announcement is forthcoming.

You will remember that in 2020, Blizzard released a heavily overhauled remaster of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion Frozen Throne, which was a highly controversial and unpopular product. Named Warcraft III: Reforged, the updated release modernized the graphics of the original title, as well adding new campaign and online play features. Reforged was panned for many of the changes, as well as foregoing many features that fans had wanted. While the enthusiasm for Reforged faded mere months after the game came out, the game has somewhat steadily received updates and there is currently a mysterious "2.0" update for the pending on the Public Test Realms, suggesting that a significant patch is inbound, perhaps even a soft reboot of sorts.

The Warcraft games are highly regarded real-time strategy games that fans have loved for decades. It was disappointing to see the poor reception to Warcraft III: Reforged, as I have a great deal of admiration for that game. I'm hopeful to see the game further course correct and "reforge" its reputation with the fans. And I hope that Blizzard utilizes the harsh reception towards Reforged to make sure they land the Warcraft II remaster.
