The remake of the JRPG Classic Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is officially out today on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC

To go along with the brand new launch trailer, Square Enix has taken the time to answer some of the questions you may have about the new release.

What’s the story of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven?

Let’s start with the basic setup because Revenge of the Seven’s story is wonderfully unique.

It’s set in a world in turmoil. Fiends threaten the lands and long-dormant conflicts look set to reignite at any moment. The people have long waited with hope of an ancient legend: the return of seven great heroes who once rose to save their ravaged kingdoms.

But now, the Seven Heroes are back - and their intentions seem less than altruistic.

You start the game in control of Emperor Leon - ruler of the Varennes Empire. While Leon and his son Gerard are away taking care of some vicious fiends that threaten their lands, the capital city, Avalon, is attacked, and Prince Victor, the heir to the throne, is murdered. The aggressor is none other than Kzinssie - one of the Seven Heroes of legend!

How does the Inheritance System work?

Inheritance is a big deal in Romancing SaGa 2 - it’s not just a narrative device, it’s also a gameplay mechanic!

As you play through the story, new Emperors will ascend to the throne - and the role of protagonist! At first, Leon passes his skills to Gerard, but after that, it’s entirely up to you to choose your successor.

Any playable character can become the next Emperor - is there a particular class you enjoy using? Put them in the starring role! Don’t worry about starting from scratch because they’ll inherit strength from the Emperor who came before them.

You’ll appoint new Emperors as the story progresses and time moves on - but also should your entire party fall or your Emperor’s LP (Life Points) reaches zero in battle. Of course, you can always arrange an abdication if you want to push things along… just not twice in a row.

How does combat work?

As you’d hope, battles are a big part of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. That’s a good thing because the game’s combat system is snappy, strategic, and very compelling. It definitely has that ‘ok, just one more fight’ factor that makes it hard to put down.

Battles are turn-based, similar to games like FINAL FANTASY X. Character portraits are presented on a timeline at the top of the screen, which determines the order your party takes action. This opens up all kinds of possibilities - for example, characters adjacent in the turn order may be able to pull off powerful United Attacks for extra damage.

Your fiendish foes are also vulnerable to different spell elements and weapon types and exploiting these weaknesses can be the key to success… provided you can discover them of course.

Fans of classic RPGs will be happily comfortable with the combat system, but the timeline system gives it a unique twist that makes it feel fresh and exciting.

In short, combat is really fun.

The game’s a remake, right?

Yep, this game’s a full remake of the original Romancing SaGa 2, which released in 1993 for the Super Famicom in Japan. Of course, since the game didn’t originally come out in the West, we think it’s a safe bet that a lot of you haven’t played it!

That’s fine because this remake doesn’t demand any prior knowledge. It takes everything that was great about that game, such as the story and Inheritance System, but builds on it with new features, 3D environments, modern presentation, a revamped combat system, new difficulty levels, new story elements, new post-game content and much more.

In other words, this classic RPG has reimagined through a new lens - the perfect fusion of classic sensibilities with modern design!
