How Like a Dragon: Tuna lead to Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza

Today Sachie Kobari over at the Official PlayStation Blog published an interview with Mr. Masayoshi Yokoyama of RGG Studio. In the interview Kobari asked Yokoyama about the creation of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, and other questions concerning the game as well. However, one pretty interesting piece of information was revealed; the original idea came from a project called "Like a Dragon: Tuna."

According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, Like a Dragon: Tuna was a concept for a game, where Kiryu would take to the seas as a tuna fisherman. Along the way he would encounter other fisherman and seafarers, and would get into fights with them (similar to the rest of the series). Tuna fishing (and fishing in general) was a part of Like a Dragon 3 (known as Yakuza 3 in the West), so this idea really isn't too far out there. In fact, it sounds like a Like a Dragon game! However, the idea never came to be, but Yokoyama said that the concepts never really left them. The idea of being out at sea was interesting, and they decided now would be the perfect time to tackle it.

The interview also discusses how Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza was being developed during the creation of Infinite Wealth. The developers felt like they didn't have enough to go off of to make a Like a Dragon 9 at the moment, but thought they could use other characters to create something new to go along with Kasuga's adventure in 8. Ultimately they chose Majima for this outing, and Pirate Yakuza was born.

Similar to Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man who Erased His Name, Pirate Yakuza will be a "smaller scale" entry within the series, which Yokoyama says is "perfect for adults" as not everyone has the time to sink hundreds of hours into a single title.

The interview also goes more into how the game will play, which can be read more about in full over at the PlayStation Blog.
