Bakeru, known in Japan under its original title "Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan!!" is officially bound for a Western release, and we don't have long to wait. As revealed by a listing on the Australian Nintendo eShop, Bakeru is set for release on September 3, 2024 on the Nintendo Switch console. (Update: Bakeru has also been announced for a PC release.)
Described as a spiritual successor to the beloved Ganbare Goemon series, Bakeru looks to capture a similar, lighthearted spirit, replete with fantastical Japanese characters and creatures. The game was developed by Good-Feel, the team behind "Kirby's Epic Yarn" and Princess Peach: Showtime! and Spike Chunsoft is handling the Western publishing.
Bakeru is a 3D action-platformer. The setting for the game is described as being in "Fairy Tale Japan" and the plot sees Bakeru travel across 47 Japanese prefectures to battle evil spirits and free Japan from their control. The eShop page for Bakeru describes "Fairy Tale Japan" as being a "mix of modern Japan and old period dramas" and there are 50 stages to play through.
Bakeru is a Tanuki boy in a human form, and uses a mystical drum passed down by his clan to purify the evil spirits, wielding the drumsticks as clubs to dole out vicious combos on enemies. He can also obtain Henge Licenses from characters that allow him to transform into mythical figures from Japanese folklore, like Kintaro and Momotaro, and use their skills and powers.
Some additional features have been added to the Western release in the form of two new attacks: "Hurricane" and "Spinning Top." There will also be a new enemy type in this release: the Lantern Boss.
Bakeru is set to release on the Nintendo Switch console on September 3, 2024. Here is the link to the Australian eShop listing. According to this listing, it seems that a free demo will accompany the release.
