Amazon has announced that a Like a Dragon live action series will be coming to Amazon Prime on October 25th! The show will be called "Like a Dragon: Yakuza," and will run for six episodes.
Like a Dragon, previously known as Yakuza in the West, has been an ongoing series for SEGA since 2005, and has had multiple titles released under the name. The original story began with Kiryu Kazuma, an ex Yakuza (Japanese Mafia) member who returns to his home town after being released from a 10 year sentence in prison.
Upon his release, Kiryu is thrown into a world that is alien to him, where even the Yakuza itself has changed. After meeting a little girl looking for her mom, and discovering his best friend is no longer the man he used to, Kiryu sets out on a journey that is filled with shocking plot twists, heart wrenching moments, and even a few laughs. What begins as a simple return story, turns into something no one could have imagined, and evolved into the story we know today.
While Yakuza has been greatly expanded upon with each game release (think of each release as a new season in a TV series), the Amazon Prime show will be focusing on the first entry, and will once again follow the story of Kiryu Kazuma.

The series is a live-action adaptation with an original story based on SEGA’s global hit game franchise, Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Directed by the critically acclaimed Masaharu Take, the series will feature Ryoma Takeuchi as the lead character, Kazuma Kiryu. Like a Dragon: Yakuza is the latest addition to the Prime membership. Released in 2005 by SEGA, the ‘Yakuza’ game series was positioned as an entertaining game for adults, which found massive fanfare amongst its target audience. The series depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people living in a huge entertainment district, Kamurochō, a fictional district modeled after the violent Shinjuku ward’s Kabukichō, that acts as the backdrop of the gameplay. Like a Dragon: Yakuza showcases modern Japan and the dramatic stories of these intense characters, such as the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that games in the past have not been able to explore. The much-loved game has captured the attention and hearts of fans not only in Japan but also internationally and will now be adapted, developed, and streamed worldwide on Prime Video.
