By now I'm sure a lot of you have heard what was said about the
Resident Evil series. It turns out that Capcom is actually considering a
reboot of the series, and they are also considering making it more open
world; still, how do you guys feel about that?
Over the years Resident Evil has actually seen many different styles of play, and almost everyone has reacted to these changes in different ways. Not everyone has been a fan of every Resident Evil style, and really, the fan base is actually pretty split.
If you look back on the old Resident Evil games you will find that they are "standard" survivor horror games. They have a fixed camera angle, they use tank controls, save points are limited, health is limited, weapons and ammo are limited, there are puzzles to solve, bosses to fight, and if you expect to make it through the game you have to take a LOT of risks and learn to manage just about EVERYTHING. Now this does in fact make the original games more of a challenge, but not everyone is actually a fan of that style. It's not easy to get used to, and a lot of the time you may find yourself redoing hours worth of gameplay because you screwed up.
The second style of Resident Evil gameplay comes from Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 4 shifts the game to a standard 3rd person view, and it also takes the game down the shooter route. Ammo is easier to find, you can save as much as you want, and it also brought in quite a few new ground breaking additions to 3rd person shooters as well (such as the ability to shoot through doors/block off doors to keep enemies from getting in). The change was a massive change, and because of that not everyone actually liked it, while other people found it to be their favorite game.
Resident Evil Mercs is the "3rd" style of play in a RE game, but really it's a mix of the old with some new. These games are action arcade styled mini games that take place within the main Resident Evil games, but they actually have a huge fanbase of their own. Their fast and addictive gameplay had a lot of people hooked, and it even got its own spin off for the 3DS.
The Chronicle games are another style of Resident Evil games, but this time you really don't have as much control. The Chronicle games were on rail shooters designed for the Wii and are based around story telling and, well, shooting everything on the screen! While not a core part of the RE series, they are a different type of game, and they do have a fanbase.
Besides these games there are quite a few other spin offs, as well as twists/"improvements" which were made to the above formulas. Resident Evil 5 for example continues the action style seen in RE4 with some twists of its own, while Revelations actually blends RE4 with the classic survival horror style. Either way the fanbase is still split between all of these different types of games, and nothing is going to change that.
So, what about this reboot? What if Resident Evil went open world? Will it really change anything? Really that's anyone's guess, but personally I'd like to see where it could go. Having an open world with a rebooted story WOULD allow Capcom to do much more with the game/go outside of the boundaries they have created for themselves, and it could also pull more fans into the series. I mean, really, what's more likely to draw in new people? A game called "Resident Evil 7," or a game with a new original title?
Anyway... What do you guys think? Would you like to see a reboot? Why or why not?
